Plan your pickup and your first stop
Nelson is a compact, sunny city at the top of the South Island, and a campervan collected here is for Tasman and the northwest.
Abel Tasman is reached from Marahau or Kaiteriteri; on most visits the van stays at a holiday park while you take a boat or walk. The road west through the Tākaka Hill and on toward the Whanganui Inlet is winding. Picton, where the Cook Strait ferries actually dock, is a drive east through the Sounds, not a suburb of Nelson.
Driving is on the left. The city centre is small enough that a large motorhome should be aimed at a site rather than at the cafés. A Nelson handover is the depot, not every vineyard gate in the district.
Book the Abel Tasman boat, if you want one, and the holiday park separately. The van will not be going to the beaches that have no road.
Give the Tākaka Hill respect, especially if the vehicle is long or the weather is wet. It is not a motorway dip.
If you are connecting to the ferry, check the Picton check-in time before you linger in Nelson. Drive on the left, and keep night one simple.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
