Hiring a campervan in Picton

Picton is a small port in Queen Charlotte Sound, and its job in a campervan trip is the Cook Strait.

Interislander and Bluebridge arrive here from Wellington, or leave here if you are returning north. Collecting a van in Picton means the first roads are the Sounds and a choice: west toward Nelson and Abel Tasman, a short hop to Blenheim and the vineyards, or the highway south into the rest of the island. It is a town with a wharf, not a city with suburbs to tour.

Queen Charlotte Drive toward Havelock is winding and often a poor match for a long motorhome. Ferry weather in the strait rewrites arrival times. Driving is on the left. A Picton handover is the depot or the port logic, not a pickup in every bay of the Sounds.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

If you are rolling off a ship and into a handover, or the reverse, put nothing else ambitious in that day. Delays happen in this strait.

  2. 02

Check whether Queen Charlotte Drive is appropriate for your length. The highway via Tuamarina is the calmer way west if it is not.

  3. 03

Book the vehicle sailing and the first night’s park. A viewpoint over the Sound is not an overnight, however quiet it looks after the last sailing.
