Hiring a campervan in Queenstown

Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu under the Remarkables, and the town centre is too steep and too busy to be where you learn a large motorhome.

The airport is close, at Frankton, so a fly-in handover is at least a short hop rather than a city crossing. The immediate drives are the lake roads and the Crown Range toward Wanaka, which is steep, high and restricted by some rental conditions. Milford Sound is not a side trip from the lakefront. It is a very long day via Te Anau, with a winter avalanche risk on the Milford Road that can close it outright.

Driving is on the left. Winter is a ski-road season as well as a scenery season. A Queenstown handover is one depot, not every lodge along the lake.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Read the rental conditions for the Crown Range and for gravel spurs before you leave the depot. A navigation pin is not permission.

  2. 02

Give Milford a very early start from Te Anau, or accept that it is an overnight in Te Anau plus the road, not a Queenstown afternoon. Check winter road status.

  3. 03

Park the van at a holiday park and walk or ride into the centre. Do not hunt for a town-centre bay in a motorhome at dusk.
