ROOM FOR YOUR KIND OF TRIP
Think about who is coming and how you like to travel. Check sleeping spaces, travel seats, kitchen equipment and luggage storage when choosing your campervan.
Plan your pickup and your first stop
Auckland spreads across a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and a campervan trip that starts here spends its first skill on the motorways.
Northland and the Bay of Islands are a long northern day, not a beach hop. Rotorua and the volcanic centre sit south, a more realistic first evening if you leave promptly. Wellington is a full day’s driving or more, and the Cook Strait ferry after that is a separate vehicle booking. Waiheke’s vehicle ferry is the same kind of specific reservation, not a casual passenger hop from the downtown piers.
The airport is at Mangere, south of the isthmus, so an airport handover and a downtown depot aim the first hour in different directions. Driving is on the left. Most suburbs are not collection points.
Choose north or south before handover and put night one that way. Crossing the harbour bridge twice with a new van is a wasted afternoon.
Book any vehicle ferry, including a Cook Strait sailing later in the trip, for the van itself. Check length limits when you do.
School holidays pack the northern motorway and the Coromandel. Use a proper holiday park, and do not treat a beach car park as an overnight.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
