Plan your pickup and your first stop
Christchurch sits on the Canterbury plains, a rebuilt, mostly flat city that only feels mountainous once you leave it.
Banks Peninsula and Akaroa are the close winding drive, over the hills and down to a harbour. Arthur’s Pass is the alpine road west toward the glaciers’ side of the island. Kaikoura is up the coast. Queenstown is a long inland day, not a side trip after a botanical-garden stop. The airport lies west of the city, which helps if you are leaving toward the mountains and matters less if you are going north to the ferry at Picton.
Driving is on the left. Nor’west winds are part of the plains. A city handover is one depot, not every suburb on the grid.
If Queenstown is night one, start early and still treat it as a long day with a break, not a commute. Arthur’s Pass is a better scale for a first alpine afternoon.
Check the weather before the peninsula road, which is winding and exposed, and before any westbound pass.
Book holiday parks in summer. The plains look empty and the legal overnight spots do not multiply to match. Drive on the left from the depot gate.
