Dunedin is a steep southern city on a harbour, with a Scottish street plan and a peninsula that keeps the wildlife.

A campervan collected here is a far-south trip. The Otago Peninsula road toward Taiaroa Head is narrow, scenic and a poor match for a very long motorhome. Baldwin Street is a curiosity you do not drive a camper up. The Catlins begin to the south as a slower coast of forests and beaches. Queenstown lies inland over high country. Christchurch is a long day north, by coast or by the interior.

You are not starting near the West Coast glaciers or the Cook Strait ferry. Driving is on the left. A city depot is not a handover in every hillside suburb.

A few things worth knowing

Do not put the peninsula road and a Queenstown crossing on the same first day. The harbour hills alone are enough introduction to the van’s width.

Watch for sea lions and tourists stopped in the lane. Use the pull-offs that exist, and skip the ones that do not fit you.

Book a site in or near the city for night one if you arrived late. Fuel before the Catlins, where towns are small and the roads ask for daylight.
