Plan your pickup and your first stop
Turin spreads along the Po with arcades, boulevards and a ZTL in the historic core.
The Mole Antonelliana is a landmark you visit on foot. The campervan reason to be here is geographic: the Susa valley leaves the city for the western Alps, with the seasonal road over the Mont Cenis toward France and the Fréjus tunnel as the all-year alternative. Gran Paradiso’s edge and the wine hills of the Langhe, to the southeast, are the other escapes.
Winter equipment is not theoretical on these roads. A pass that is a pleasant August crossing can be shut, or require chains, while Turin is merely cold and dry. Sleep outside the restricted streets, in the valley or the hills, and treat the centre as a café city rather than a driving one.
Check the pass or tunnel plan the morning you leave Turin. The city’s weather forecast is not the col’s forecast.
The arcaded centre is a ZTL. Ride in, or walk from an outer stop, and do not let a museum pin pull the van through a gate.
Fuel and chains, if the season demands them, are a valley-town job before the last climb. The summit is a bad place to invent a solution.
