Alghero (Sassari) points inland, to the provincial capital behind the coral coast.

The road climbs off the sea onto a plateau of cork oak, wind turbines and Nuragic stone, and Sassari itself is a working city with a historic centre under a ZTL. It is a different day from the bastions: broader streets on the outskirts, a hill town’s core you still should not drive, and a base for the northwest interior rather than for another beach afternoon.
Use this side of the island when the trip is about the plateau, the road toward Villanova and the interior, or a supply day before you commit to the west-coast corniche. The sea remains within reach, but the overnight belongs up here, where a campervan is less of an intruder than it is under Alghero’s walls.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Sassari’s old streets are a ZTL. Do the centre on foot from an outer stop, the same discipline as any Italian city, even though the postcard is down at Alghero.
- 02
The plateau can be hotter than the coast at midday and cooler after dark. Plan water and a layer for the evening.
- 03
If you descend to the sea afterwards, do it in the morning. Climbing back inland against the coastal traffic at sunset is the slow version of a short map.
