Plan your pickup and your first stop
Bologna’s porticoes, towers and market streets sit inside one of Italy’s clearer ZTL maps.
A campervan does not get to browse them. The city is a walk from outside the gates, famous for its kitchens and rightly so, and a poor place to learn a vehicle. The drives are the Via Emilia across the plain, east or west, and the Apennine roads south, the Futa and the Raticosa among them, which climb toward Florence on a different timetable from the autostrada.
Those passes are not Alpine cols, but they are mountain enough: bends, trucks, and weather that can close a ridge while the plain is merely foggy. In winter the Po valley fog is its own hazard, slow and sudden. Sleep outside the gates, eat in town on foot, and choose either the flat Emilian road or the ridge, not both before dark.
Set the overnight outside the ZTL and do not let navigation “save time” through the historic gates. Fines are the local souvenir.
If you drive the Futa, start with a full tank and daylight. It is a pleasure road, not a bypass when the autostrada feels dull.
Market streets around the Quadrilatero are pedestrian. Walk them. The van’s kitchen is for the night outside, after you have bought the food on foot.
