Hiring a campervan in Bergamo

Bergamo is two cities, and only one of them is even debatable for a vehicle.

Città Alta sits inside Venetian walls on a hill, reached by funicular and threaded by lanes that are a ZTL. Città Bassa is broader, still patched with restrictions, and still not a place to tour in a motorhome. The campervan pattern is simple: walk the upper town, then drive toward Lake Iseo, the Franciacorta vines, or a valley of the Orobie.

The mountains behind the city rise quickly. They are pre-Alpine rather than a high pass like the Stelvio, but the valley roads narrow and the weekend traffic from the plain is real. Sleep below the walls or out by the lake, and treat the airport at Orio al Serio as a separate geography if you happen to be flying. This page is the city and its hills.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Do not attempt the upper town’s gates in a campervan, even if a barrier happens to be raised. The streets beyond were not built for it.

  2. 02

Lake Iseo’s waterside towns jam on sunny Sundays. Swim or look on a weekday morning, and keep the van on the landward side.

  3. 03

The funicular is the pleasant way up. Use it, and leave the vehicle where turning around is still dignified.
