Plan your pickup and your first stop
Alghero is the Catalan-speaking port on Sardinia’s northwest coast, a walled town of bastions above a coral sea.
The historic lanes are a ZTL in spirit and usually in fact: a campervan does not belong under the sea walls. The trip is the Riviera del Corallo outside them, the road south toward Bosa, and the inland nuraghi set in scrub and wind.
Neptune’s Grotto, up the coast, is a stairway and a boat, not a parking strategy. The coastal road is beautiful and slow, with lay-bys that fill by late morning in summer. Sleep away from the bastions, arrive for a swim early, and keep the evening for the town on foot when the van is already settled.
Assume the historic centre is closed to you. Park outside the walls and walk the last stretch along the bastions.
The Bosa road deserves daylight. It is not a shortcut after a late flight, and the oncoming traffic in August includes other campers who also think they will find a bay.
Wind on the west coast is ordinary. A low van on a sheltered pitch sleeps better than a tall one facing the sea with an awning out.
