Bologna (Imola) shifts the story east along the Via Emilia to Imola, where the Santerno river and the motor-racing circuit define the town more than any arcade.
The historic centre is smaller than Bologna’s and still not a campervan circuit: walk the main square, and keep the vehicle on the outer roads or at a pitch toward the Apennine foot.
Race weekends rewrite the map with closures and crowds. On an ordinary week Imola is a calm Emilian town between Bologna and Faenza, with ceramics country further east and the hills rising to the south. It is a useful night if you want the plain without Bologna’s ZTL intensity, and a bad night if you arrive during a grand event without a plan.
Check the sporting calendar before you promise yourself a quiet river night. A race week is a different town.
The centre is walkable and should be walked. Do not park a motorhome in front of the old gate because the space looks briefly empty.
Heading south into the hills, the roads shrink quickly. Fuel on the Via Emilia, and leave the high lanes for a shorter vehicle or a passenger outing.
