Hiring a campervan in Bari

Bari divides into a nineteenth-century grid and Bari Vecchia, a dense old town beside the harbour that is no place for a campervan.

The ZTL and the sheer width of the lanes settle the question. Walk the basilica and the waterfront, then take the van into the olive groves toward Alberobello’s trulli, Polignano’s cliff road, or the Murge. The city is also an Adriatic ferry port, with vehicle sailings toward Albania and Greece, so some trips pause here because the ship does.

Puglia’s roads are often straight, white and hot. They are kinder to a motorhome than Naples or the Amalfi corniche, provided you stay out of the historic cores. A night among the olives, rather than against the port fence, keeps the ferry day and the sightseeing day from collapsing into each other.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Do not follow navigation into Bari Vecchia. The pin is wrong even when the line looks open.

  2. 02

On a sailing day, be at the port for the vehicle check-in and skip the olive-grove detour. Ships do not wait for a last look at Polignano.

  3. 03

Summer heat on the Adriatic plain is serious. Shade the van by early afternoon, and do not count on a sea breeze inside a walled town you should not have entered.
