Hiring a campervan in Trondheim

Trondheim stands on a bend of the Nidelva where Norway narrows, and a campervan collected here can go three ways.

North, the E6 runs toward the Arctic and eventually the countries of the midnight sun. West, the roads run out to the coast and, further along, the Atlantic Road’s bridges. South, the way leads back over Dovrefjell toward the valleys and Oslo. Nidaros and the riverside warehouses are the walking core. The van should be on the way out of that core.

The airport at Værnes is east, in Stjørdal, and is a separate page. Driving is on the right. This is a calmer urban start than Bergen’s harbour and a less metropolitan one than Oslo. A city depot is not every neighbourhood on the peninsula.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Choose the direction the night before handover and take that road. Seeing the cathedral from the driver’s seat on the way to all three exits is how you stay in town too long.

  2. 02

If you are going north in winter, shorten the leg and check the forecast. If you are going to the coast, check ferry and bridge details for your height.

  3. 03

Park at a proper site, drive on the right, and leave the wooden waterfront to your feet.
