Hiring a campervan in Bergen

Bergen is the fjord city, wooden, vertical and usually wet.

Bryggen and the harbour are for walking. A campervan collected here belongs on the roads out: toward Hardanger, onto coastal islands by tunnel and ferry, or eventually across the mountains. Ferries in this part of Norway are not a special excursion bolted onto a holiday. They are how the road continues, and they run to a timetable you have to meet. The crossing toward Oslo over Hardangervidda is a seasonal mountain day, a different project from a fjord afternoon.

The airport is south at Flesland and has its own page. Driving is on the right. Narrow streets in the centre are a reason to leave, not a sightseeing route. A city depot is not every hillside neighbourhood.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Ask for the exit toward your first fjord, and use it before you try to see the harbour from the cab. Park at a proper site and walk in.

  2. 02

Check the day’s ferry times on the road you have chosen, including the last sailing. A tunnel alternative may exist and may be the better choice for a tall vehicle; confirm height either way.

  3. 03

In winter, treat mountain roads and the plateau as conditional. Book the site, drive on the right, and expect the rain to still be there in the morning.
