Hiring a campervan in Oslo

Oslo sits at the end of a fjord, with a toll ring and a centre that is better walked than driven in a motorhome.

A campervan start here is about the exit: south along the coast, north toward Gudbrandsdalen and the park roads, or west toward the mountains and, eventually, the seasonal crossing to Bergen. Nordmarka’s forest begins at the edge of town and is not a motorhome playground. The opera house and the waterfront are a walk after the van is parked.

Gardermoen is well north of the city and is its own airport page. Driving is on the right. A winter handover in the centre is a poorer shakedown than joining the E6 already outside the ring. A city depot is not every neighbourhood inside the toll cordon.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Ask which way out of the toll ring matches your route, and take it before sightseeing. Pay attention to the toll system the rental expects you to use.

  2. 02

Do not aim for Bergen on collection day. If the mountains are the plan, stop in a valley site and cross in daylight, after you have checked that the road is open.

  3. 03

In winter, keep the first leg short and on a main road. Book the site, drive on the right, and leave the harbour streets alone.
