Plan your pickup and your first stop
Trieste faces the Adriatic at the foot of a karst plateau, a coffee-house port with a grand square and a compact centre you can walk.
The campervan’s interest is the road up onto the Carso, the viewpoints over the gulf, and the short cross into Slovenia, where the rules change at the border even though the landscape does not. The bora, a fierce northeast wind, drops off the plateau and can make a tall vehicle miserable on an exposed quay or a bare pitch.
This is a border city, not a beach resort and not a Tuscan hill town. The roads inland are limestone, scrub and sudden views. Sleep up on the plateau or along the coast west toward the Venetian fringe, and come down to the square when you want the city. Do not try to use the port streets as a scenic drive in a motorhome.
Respect the bora forecast. If it is blowing, do not plan a night on an open waterfront, and hold the wheel on the plateau roads with both hands’ worth of attention.
The historic square is a walk. Navigation to a café on the quay is how motorhomes end up performing a turn they cannot finish.
Border queues vary with the season. Keep documents and a full tank on the Italian side if the day’s plan is a loop rather than a one-way crossing.
