Hiring a campervan in Tarragona

Tarragona stacks a Roman circus, an amphitheatre and a cathedral on a hill above a working port, the Part Alta.

Those golden stones are a walking morning. A campervan is out of place in the upper streets and useful on the Costa Daurada’s edge or, more interestingly, south toward the Ebro delta, where rice fields, lagoons and a flat wind replace the hill. Barcelona’s orbit is north; the delta is the direction that feels like a journey.

The coast here is a family shore, broad and built-up in summer, not a series of secret coves. The delta is open, mosquitoed in season, and crossed by roads that a motorhome can actually use if you stay on them and off the fragile tracks. Sleep outside the Roman hill, and choose either the beach pitch or the rice country for the night, not a fantasy on the port road.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Walk the Part Alta. Do not thread a motorhome up to the cathedral because the amphitheatre looked reachable from the coast road.

  2. 02

On the delta, stay on the public roads meant for visitors. Farm tracks and lagoon edges are not a scenic shortcut for a heavy vehicle.

  3. 03

Summer weekends on the Costa Daurada fill the obvious pitches. The delta is the pressure valve only if you arrive with daylight and a place that accepts your length.
