Hiring a campervan in Almería

Almería is the driest corner of the Spanish coast, an alcazaba above a port and a plain that turns quickly into the Tabernas badlands and the volcanic cape of Cabo de Gata.

The fortress and the centre are a walk. The van comes alive on the desert roads, where western-film gullies sit under a hard sky, and on the cape, which is a natural park with its own access limits.

Wild nights on the beach or in a cove are not a plan. The park restricts where you may drive and where you may sleep, and the rest of Spain is no more relaxed about camping libre. Use campsites and designated motorhome areas. The landscape is extraordinary enough without inventing a pitch on a protected track.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Check the day’s access for Cabo de Gata before you commit. Some tracks are for residents, services or nobody in a motorhome.

  2. 02

Carry more water than the city’s fountains suggest. Tabernas at midday is an oven, and services are spaced for cars with air-conditioning, not for a slow scenic linger.

  3. 03

The alcazaba hill is a foot climb. Settle the van on the flat side of the city first.
