Plan your pickup and your first stop
Bilbao lines the Nervión, a once-industrial estuary turned into a river of museums, with the Guggenheim on the flat and the Casco Viejo stacked on the right bank.
The old quarter is a walking maze. A campervan belongs out of it, on the roads that climb immediately into green valleys, toward Vitoria if you want the interior, or along the coast toward the other Basque towns. Rain is frequent. The meseta’s dry plateau is a long drive and a different country.
The surrounding relief is the surprise for anyone who has only seen the museum photos. Streets rise, bridges multiply, and a tall vehicle meets low signs in the hillside neighbourhoods. Sleep in the valley or on the coast, and come in for the river on foot.
Do not navigate the Casco Viejo. The Guggenheim’s river edge is also a poor cruise in a motorhome at weekend pace.
Hillside exits from the city are steeper than a map suggests. Pick the valley in daylight the first time.
If you continue to San Sebastián, that city’s old quarter is another refusal. Enjoy the coast road and walk the last part in each town.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
