Plan your pickup and your first stop
Santander folds around a wide bay in Cantabria, with El Sardinero’s beach on the ocean side and a ferry terminal that has long linked the port to southern England.
For a campervan, that ship is sometimes the whole reason to be here: you arrive as freight, exit the port, and only then become a tourist. If you are not sailing, the city is still a handsome base, but the centre and the headlands are walks, and the van’s days run west toward the Picos de Europa or along the green coast.
Cantabria is steep, wet and dairy-green, a cousin of Asturias and a world away from the meseta’s straight horizons. Summer brings beach traffic; the rest of the year brings weather and quiet roads. Sleep off the bay front, and keep the ferry morning free of scenic ideas.
On a sailing day, be at the port early and skip the cape. Vehicle check-in is the appointment.
El Sardinero looks spacious and still does not want a motorhome circling the front in August. Use a pitch and walk the sand.
Mountain roads west of the city demand daylight. A late exit from the ferry plus a Picos village is two plans welded together badly.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
