Hiring a campervan in Rotorua

Rotorua is a geothermal lake district in the middle of the North Island, and the sulphur is not a rumour.

A campervan collected here is for the lakes, the redwood forest and the thermal areas, with real care around steam, soft ground and signed-off paths. It sits between Auckland and Wellington, so it works as a mid-island handover: you skip the harbour motorway and the capital’s hills and start where the North Island is volcanic.

Māori cultural sites are part of why people come; they are visits, not driving loops. The roads between the lakes are the actual van trip. There is no Cook Strait ferry here. Driving is on the left. A town handover is not every lakeside motel.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Stay on formed roads and boardwalks in thermal areas. Do not pull onto a steam-side shoulder because it looks dramatic.

  2. 02

Book a holiday park rather than assuming a lake outlook is a legal night. Summer and school holidays fill the familiar sites.

  3. 03

If you are connecting to Auckland or Wellington, give that highway its own day. Rotorua to the ferry is not a quick add-on after a thermal morning.
