Plan your pickup and your first stop
Rome Fiumicino Airport sits on the coastal plain west of the city, between the Tiber’s mouth and the Tyrrhenian beaches.
The handover is at the airport, not in Trastevere and not at a neighbourhood desk inside the ZTL. From here you can run north along the coast toward Santa Marinella and Civitavecchia, south toward Ostia and Anzio, or onto the GRA only as a bypass. Civitavecchia’s ferries to Sardinia leave from that northern port, a separate commitment from the airfield.
The centro storico is the temptation to refuse. You have landed in Rome, and the van makes the monuments feel falsely close. They are close for a train from Fiumicino and far for a legal motorhome. Take a first night on the coast or just outside the ring, learn the vehicle, and visit the city later as a passenger.
Book the first night west or north of the airport, a short drive away. A Tuscan hill town before dark is too far after a handover.
Refuse any first-hour route via the centre. The coast road and the ring exist so you do not need one.
Flying out of Fiumicino, sleep on the same coastal side. Crossing the GRA from the far Castelli on a departure morning collides with everyone else who thought the ring was empty at dawn.
