ROOM FOR YOUR KIND OF TRIP
Think about who is coming and how you like to travel. Check sleeping spaces, travel seats, kitchen equipment and luggage storage when choosing your campervan.
Plan your pickup and your first stop
Rome’s limited-traffic zone covers the streets people mean when they say Rome: the centro storico, Trastevere’s lanes, and a patchwork of cameras that a campervan should never test.
The GRA, the ring road, is the adult way around. You sleep outside it or just beyond it, in the Castelli Romani, toward the Appia’s outer stretches, or on the coast, and you enter the city by metro, train or bus.
The van still has Roman days that are not the Pantheon. Tivoli and the approach to Hadrian’s villa, the Via Appia Antica where vehicles are restricted in places and scenic in others, and the roads out toward Bracciano or the south are real drives. They require you to read the day’s access rules rather than assuming a ruin means a car park for coaches. The forum is a walking visit. Believe that before you arrive.
Set the navigation to avoid the limited-traffic zone before you move. “Fastest” will draw you through a gate and a fine.
Arrive at the night stop first on the day you land or collect the van. Sightseeing with an unfamiliar motorhome and an unset pitch is how people end up facing a bollard at dusk.
Via Appia Antica has sections where you should be a guest of the rules, not a through-driver. If in doubt, walk the ancient stones and keep the van on the modern road.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
