Plan your pickup and your first stop
Pisa’s leaning tower stands on the Field of Miracles, a lawn and a set of monuments surrounded by a centre that is partly pedestrian and partly ZTL.
It is one of the least suitable postcard frames in Italy for a campervan photograph from the driver’s seat. You park outside, walk in, and leave. The Arno’s quays and the streets of the old town do not improve the idea.
The vehicle’s day is the Tuscan coast: the road toward Viareggio and Torre del Lago, the quieter pine woods, or an inland hop toward Lucca, whose own walls are another walking problem. Pisa is small enough that people imagine they can nip through. The cameras and the bollards disagree. Sleep in the pines or along the Arno outside the restricted streets.
Set the stop well outside the Field of Miracles and budget the walk. Circling the monument zone is how tempers and fines are made.
Lucca’s walls are a pedestrian ring. Do not enter the inner city because a gate looks wide; the streets inside are not a reward.
Summer coaches arrive late morning. Be on the lawn early or late, with the van already legal, rather than in a queue of motorhomes inventing spaces.
