Hiring a campervan in Palermo

Palermo fills the Conca d’Oro with markets, Baroque domes and a historic centre under a ZTL.

A campervan in those streets is a mistake you will not be allowed to finish comfortably. Walk the markets early, then leave: up toward Monreale’s cathedral by a planned outer stop, east along the north coast toward Cefalù, or west toward Trapani and the hill of Erice. Ferries link Palermo with Naples, Civitavecchia and other mainland ports, so the city is sometimes a vehicle gateway rather than a base.

The coastal road east is scenic and uneven in width. Cefalù’s old town is another walking core under the rock. Erice’s summit is a bus or a very modest vehicle, not a coachbuilt arrival at lunch. Sleep outside Palermo’s bowl, where the air moves and the morning exit is a road rather than a market.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Morning markets mean early pedestrians in the centre you are not driving through. Do your walking, then exit the city before the heat and the traffic peak together.

  2. 02

Cefalù and Erice are drop-off visits. Decide the vehicle stop before you see the rock or the summit, not when the lane has already narrowed.

  3. 03

If you board a ferry, treat the port as freight. A last lap of the seafront is how check-in is missed.
