Hiring a campervan in Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport is at Gardermoen, well north of the city, and a campervan handover here is the usual fly-in start.

The first choice is one the downtown desk does not give you as cleanly: continue north toward the lake country and the Trondheim direction, or turn south into the capital. The E6 in winter is the real first hour, not a fjord-side street. Airport hotels and the train exist for people without a van; once you have the keys, the question is which way the highway ramp points.

You are not in the centre. Driving is on the right. This is the airport collection, not a depot in every town along the runway corridor.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Match the ramp to the route. South into Oslo “just to look” and then north again spends the daylight in traffic.

  2. 02

If you landed late, sleep near the airport corridor or a short hop up the highway. Do not start a mountain road in the dark because the map shows a cabin.

  3. 03

Check winter tyres and the day’s road status, book the site, and confirm the return is really at this airport if that is what the ticket assumes.
