Plan your pickup and your first stop
Olbia is the ferry town of northeast Sardinia, where vehicle ships from Livorno, Genoa, Piombino and Civitavecchia meet a cork-and-granite landscape.
Costa Smeralda begins just up the coast and is a sequence of manicured marinas, not a campervan promenade. Porto Cervo’s lanes are for small cars and for people who are not driving a motorhome. The honest trips are the coast toward San Teodoro, which is simpler, or inland toward the granite and the roads to Nuoro.
Arrive as a ferry passenger with a vehicle: exit the port, buy supplies, and leave the town before you try to sightsee. The airport is a different arrival, south of the centre, and should not be confused with a drive through the old streets. Sleep on the edge or down the coast, where the pitches understand length.
Give the port exit its own time. A sailing arrival plus a promise to be in a hill village by lunch is how roof racks meet low signs.
Do not follow a pin into Porto Cervo. See the coast from a beach town that expects campers, or from a viewpoint with a turning circle.
Inland fuel stations are fewer than on the coast. Fill before you leave the Olbia plain for the Nuoro road.
