Plan your pickup and your first stop
Naples is a great city and a hostile one for a campervan.
The historic centre is a ZTL, the traffic is improvised, and the hills stack streets into stairways. Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum are the excursions that justify having the vehicle, because they sit outside that tangle and have approaches a driver can understand. The Amalfi coast is the excursion that does not: the SS163 is narrow, famous, and a miserable or impossible road for a large motorhome.
Capri and the other islands are passenger ferries. The van stays on the mainland. Sorrento can be a base only if the vehicle is modest and the night is planned; it is not a place to arrive at dusk and hunt. Sleep on the plain toward the north or inland, and enter Naples as a visitor, not as a circulating vehicle.
Do not navigate through the centro storico, even for “just a minute” of the waterfront. The minute becomes a restricted street.
Pompeii’s visitor approaches are busy and straightforward compared with the city. Go early, and leave the van in a bay that matches its length rather than in a side street of modern Pompeii.
If a passenger wants the Amalfi views, take a bus or a boat from a town you can actually park in. Turning a motorhome around in a corniche village is the emergency everyone films.
