Plan your pickup and your first stop
Milan’s Duomo, the Galleria and the Navigli are a great city day and a miserable motorhome day.
Area C, the congestion-charge zone, and the ZTL streets around the centre are the practical reason. A campervan trip treats Milan as a rail and metro city: sleep well outside, ride in, and use the vehicle for what it is good at, which is leaving toward Lake Maggiore, Lake Como’s outer roads, or the Po plain.
The lake roads are the trap after the city. Como’s waterside is narrow, parked solid, and frequently restricted; Maggiore is gentler if you choose the less famous shores. Neither is an invitation to drive a coachbuilt van along a promenade because the mountain looks close. The plain, by contrast, is simple driving and ordinary pitches, a relief after the fashion streets.
Buy the public-transport day, not a closer parking pin. The centre will not reward persistence.
Leave for the lakes in the morning, before the weekend convoy, and stop short of the famous waterfronts. A town set back from the shore is the campervan version of the view.
Winter fog on the plain and summer thunderstorms in the pre-Alps are both normal. Neither is a reason to cut through Area C on the way to a pitch.
