Hiring a campervan in Malaga Airport

Málaga Airport lies on the shore between the city and Torremolinos, so the handover puts you on the Costa del Sol’s motorway almost immediately.

That is a gift and a trap. You can leave east toward the cliffs and Nerja, or west toward the resorts, without entering Málaga’s centre at all. You can also, if you are careless, be in the middle of the city because it is the nearest famous name. The handover is at the airport, not beside the Alcazaba.

Decide the direction while you are still in the briefing. A first night east or west, on a pitch that expects motorhomes, beats an evening orbit of the port. Ronda and the inland mountains are a next-morning project, when the van is familiar and the light is on the bends.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Choose east or west before you roll, and stick to it. Reversing the plan means the centre you were trying to skip.

  2. 02

Do not schedule a same-evening arrival in a hill town. The handover is at sea level; the good road inland still takes a careful hour or more.

  3. 03

For the flight home, sleep on the airport’s side of Málaga, not deep in the Guadalhorce valleys or past Marbella, unless you enjoy a dawn convoy.
