Hiring a campervan in Malaga

Málaga has refitted its port and its old centre into a walking city under the Alcazaba, with the Costa del Sol stretching away in a band of resorts.

A campervan on that seafront is a slow argument. The road that justifies the vehicle climbs inland, toward Ronda and the white towns, on grades and bends that a map flattens. East, the coast toward Nerja is cliffier and also busy. West, toward Marbella, it is built-up and rarely the point of a motorhome trip.

Sleep outside the centre, higher if you can, where the night is cooler than the beach avenue. Come down to the Picasso collections and the market on foot or by a simple transfer. The city is worth it. The crawl along the N340 in a tall van at dusk is not.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Do not hunt for a bay under the Alcazaba. See the fortress on foot from a stop you chose before entering the centre.

  2. 02

The mountain road inland needs daylight and a patient speed. Coaches and cyclists use it, and the viewpoint lay-bys are shorter than a motorhome’s optimism.

  3. 03

Summer weekends on the Costa del Sol are a queue. Shop in the morning, climb inland, and let the beach be a swim from a pitch, not a parking strategy.
