Plan your pickup and your first stop
Madrid Airport stands at Barajas, northeast of the city, already on the high plateau and well outside the squares people mean by Madrid.
The handover is at the airport. It is not a pickup in a central barrio, and the first drive should treat the centre as a place you do not cross. Guadalajara to the east, the Guadarrama to the northwest, or a wide swing south toward Aranjuez and La Mancha are the exits that keep a tall van legal and calm.
The meseta’s climate is present at the terminal: summer heat starts in the handover bay, and winter mornings are cold and clear. An island itinerary is not hiding beyond the ring road. If Mallorca or Tenerife is the real goal, this airport is the wrong map. If the plateau is the goal, you are already on it, which is the advantage of starting here.
Schedule a short first night northeast or east of the airport. A sunset in Toledo after a late handover is how unfamiliar vans meet unfamiliar hill streets in the dark.
Set the route to avoid the low-emission centre. The plateau gives you space; use it.
Returning to Barajas, sleep on the same northeast side. A last night in the Gredos or deep in La Mancha is a longer dawn than the map’s optimism suggests.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
