Plan your pickup and your first stop
Madrid sits on the meseta, a high inland plateau with a continental calendar: hot summers, cold winters, and no sea breeze to forgive a closed van.
The historic centre and a wide low-emission area are for the metro. A campervan does not browse the Plaza Mayor. It sleeps outside the city and spends its days on the plateau roads: Toledo above the Tagus, Segovia’s aqueduct, the Escorial at the foot of the Guadarrama, or the long, open run south into La Mancha.
That geography is the opposite of Palma or Tenerife. You cannot put the van on a ferry and continue this trip as an island; the islands are separate holidays reached by ship or by collecting another vehicle after a flight. Here the pleasure is distance, dry light, and towns you enter on foot after an easy highway hour. Give the sierra its weather check. A plateau afternoon does not describe a mountain road.
Ride the metro into Madrid. Do not spend the first evening hunting a bay near a famous square in a vehicle that will not fit the streets around it.
Toledo’s historic core is a hill of one-way lanes. Park below or outside and walk up, even though the road to the city was easy.
At the altitude of the meseta, the sun is strong and the nights can cool sharply. Ventilate by day and keep a layer for an open pitch after dark.
