Plan your pickup and your first stop
Lucerne is the lake city of the chapel bridge, German-speaking and one of the usual gates to the Gotthard route south.
A campervan collected here meets a tight old town and lakeside roads that are busy and winding. The mountain decision comes after that: Andermatt, the seasonal passes, or the tunnel, which stays the freight route in winter and has its own rules for vehicles. Rigi and the nearer peaks are often a boat or a train, not a road the van should be forcing.
Driving is on the right. A Lucerne handover is central Switzerland, between the Zurich plain and the high Alps, not a Romandy lake start and not Basel’s Rhine. The depot is not every hotel on the waterfront.
See the bridge on foot from a legal park, then decide tunnel or pass with the day’s road report in hand. A summer memory of an open pass is not a winter fact.
Check height and any hazardous-goods or dimension limits before the Gotthard tunnel. If the van does not fit, the plan changes in Lucerne, not at the portal.
Use a campsite, buy the motorway vignette if you need it, and drive on the right. Lakeside lay-bys are not a night’s lodging.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
