Hiring a campervan in Basel

Basel stands on the Rhine where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, and a campervan collected in the city should be aimed at those exits rather than at the old-town lanes.

The Jura, the Alsatian plain and the road south toward the lakes are all more plausible than a high pass on day one. The EuroAirport sits across the border in France; this page is the city, so a handover here is Swiss streets and a decision about which country you enter next. French and German can share a single afternoon.

Driving is on the right. A motorway vignette is required once you use Swiss autoroutes. Wild camping is not the model. A city depot is not every neighbourhood on the river.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Know which border you intend to cross and what that means for the rental, the vignette and any low-emission rules on the far side. Decide before the keys, not at the checkpoint.

  2. 02

Leave the centre on the ring and park at a proper site. The Münster is a walk.

  3. 03

Drive on the right, buy the vignette if you will use the motorway, and do not treat a Rhine-side car park as an overnight.
