Hiring a campervan in Lausanne

Lausanne climbs in terraces above the north shore of Lake Geneva, French-speaking and steeper than a first glance at the water suggests.

A campervan collected here is a lake-shore trip. The Lavaux vineyards to the east are a celebrated coast road, scenic and not a place to hurry a large van. Further on, Montreux and the Valais road continue the lake until the mountains close in. The Jura is the high ground behind you to the north, a different exit entirely.

Driving is on the right. It is a quieter start than Geneva’s border traffic and a much less alpine one than Interlaken. Olympic history does not create parking. A city handover is not every terrace and vineyard lane.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Drive the Lavaux section in daylight, slowly, and with a plan for where you will stop. Not every overlook can take a van.

  2. 02

Park in the city only where a tall vehicle is expected, then walk the terraces you came for. The centre is stepped and busy.

  3. 03

Book a lakeside campsite, drive on the right, and check the rental before any casual hop into France. The far shore looks close and may still be outside the agreement.
