Plan your pickup and your first stop
Bern is the federal city on a tight bend of the Aare, on the Swiss plateau rather than in the high valleys.
The arcades and the bear park are for walking. A campervan collected here gets a plateau start and a choice: lakes and smaller roads, or the drive south toward Interlaken, where the roads become mountain roads and the peaks finally match the brochure. That change happens after you leave the city, not in the old-town loop.
Driving is on the right. Winter pass closures matter once you are off the motorway and into the Oberland. The vignette covers the autoroutes. A handover in Bern is one depot, not every embankment neighbourhood.
Park outside the bend of the Aare and walk in if you want the city. Then drive south only as far as a booked site and the remaining daylight allow.
Check whether the pass you have in mind is open. In winter the tunnel or the valley floor may be the route, and it may have its own vehicle rules.
Buy the vignette for the motorway, drive on the right, and use a campsite. Switzerland does not treat a lay-by as a bedroom.
