Gijón curves around an Asturian bay, with the old headland of Cimavilla at one end and a long beach at the other.
Cider bars and a maritime promenade make the city a pleasant walk in the rain or out of it. A campervan is for the exit: west along the green coast, or south into the valleys that climb toward the Picos de Europa, where grades steepen, herds use the road in summer, and the weather can sit on a pass while the bay is merely cloudy.
This is the rainy north, kin to Cantabria and a stranger to the meseta. Distances are short and speeds are not. Sleep near the bay only if the pitch is real; otherwise take a valley night and come back to the cider on foot.
Cimavilla’s lanes are for walking. Do not take the scenic pin onto the headland in a motorhome.
Start mountain days early and with fuel. A pass that looks close on the map can be a slow convoy, and the last village may not sell diesel after lunch.
