Frosinone sits in the Ciociaria, in the Sacco and Liri country between Rome and Naples.

It is not a postcard city and that is its campervan virtue. The A1 corridor is near, the town is a supply stop, and the interesting drives are the hill towns: Anagni, Alatri with its cyclopean walls, Ferentino. Each has a historic centre you should still assume is restricted. The valleys between them are the easy part.

Use Frosinone when you want a night that is neither Rome’s ZTL nor Naples’s traffic. The landscape is Apennine foothill, agricultural and direct, a palate cleanser between two famous cities. Sleep here, see one hill town on foot, and save the capital and the volcano for days with their own plans.

A few things worth knowing

Treat Anagni and Alatri as walking visits. The polygons of ancient stone are in lanes that predate your wheelbase.

The valley can hold summer heat and winter fog spilling from the Apennines. Neither is a reason to hurry into Rome’s ring on the same evening you collected the van.
