Plan your pickup and your first stop
Florence is the Italian ZTL lesson in its pure form.
The historic centre, from the Duomo to the Oltrarno lanes, is not a campervan district, and the cameras mean it. You leave the vehicle outside the gates, at a designated area or a campsite in the hills, and you walk or ride in. The Arno, the galleries and Fiesole’s view are worth that discipline.
The driving days are Tuscan, and they are not automatically easy. Chianti’s roads are a sequence of village centres and cypress lanes that look romantic and park badly. The Val d’Orcia is broader and kinder to a motorhome if you stay on the main ridges and walk into Pienza or Montepulciano. Sleep among the vines or the crete, not on a Florentine quay.
Plan the night first, outside the restricted zone, and only then the gallery tickets. A van still circling at dusk is how people convince themselves the ZTL might be fine just this once.
Fiesole’s approach is uphill and busy. It is a viewpoint, not a place to arrive in a motorhome at sunset with no turnaround in mind.
Sunday drivers and cycling clubs share the Chianti lanes. Start early, and do not stop in a bend to photograph a row of cypresses.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
