Plan your pickup and your first stop
Catania is built of Etna’s black lava, a baroque centre under a volcano, with a fish market and a ZTL that together exclude a campervan from the interesting streets.
Walk the centre. Drive the mountain. The ring of roads around Etna, the climb toward Rifugio Sapienza on the southern flank, and the Ionian coast north or south are the actual trip.
North, Taormina’s terrace is famous and its streets are a known refusal for large vehicles. South, the coast toward Syracuse opens up, and Syracuse’s Ortigia is another walking island. Etna’s own rules change with eruptions and weather: a road that was open last season may be gated. The city does not warn you. Check on the day, from a pitch that is already outside the ZTL.
Treat the historic centre as closed. The market streets are for people carrying bags, not for mirrors and bike racks.
Check Etna access that morning. Do not promise a crater viewpoint on a day of closure or poor visibility, and do not drive a closed forest track because a pin still draws it.
Taormina, if you go, is a drop-off or a bus. The corniche into the town is where optimistic motorhomes become everyone’s delay.
