Plan your pickup and your first stop
Cartagena wraps a deep naval harbour with a Roman theatre, modernist frontages and a hill of castle ruins.
The interesting streets are old, sloping and narrow. A campervan sees them on foot from an outer stop. The landscape around is the dry southeast: less garden than Valencia, less desert theatre than Tabernas, with the Mar Menor lagoon to the east and Cabo de Palos at the end of a busy approach.
The lagoon and the Mediterranean side of the cape are holiday country in summer, flat and built-up in places, wilder at the headland. Neither is the historic port. Split the days. Sleep where a motorhome is expected, and do not spend the night inventing a space under the theatre because the view is good.
The theatre quarter is a foot zone in practice. Arrive, walk, leave. Do not wait for a bay to appear in front of a Roman wall.
Cabo de Palos and the lagoon fill on summer weekends. Go early, and keep the overnight booked rather than scenic and improvised.
The harbour is a working port. Follow the scenic waterfront on foot, not as a through-route for a tall vehicle at shift-change hour.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
