Plan your pickup and your first stop
Brindisi is a working Adriatic port, marked by the Roman column at the end of the old Appian approach, with vehicle ferries to Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras.
A campervan is either here to board or here to turn south into the Salento. The waterfront is a harbour, not a promenade to cruise in a motorhome, and the modest historic streets are a short walk rather than a driving tour.
If you stay in Italy, Lecce’s baroque centre, Ostuni’s white hill and the Ionian side toward Gallipoli are the days that justify the van. Each of those centres has its own restrictions. The roads between them are open, dry and simple, which is the Salento’s gift to a large vehicle, right up to the edge of the town you then enter on foot.
Give the port its own morning. Vehicle check-in and a detour to Lecce do not share a timetable.
Sleep away from the harbour fences if you are not sailing. The Salento countryside is the quieter night, and the drive back for a ship is straightforward.
Summer sun on the peninsula is direct. Cover the cab, carry water, and do not rely on narrow historic centres to offer a shady waiting place for a tall van.
