Hiring a campervan in Wittlich

Wittlich sits in the Lieser valley a little north of the Moselle, and the handover is an edge-of-town industrial street, the Max-Planck-Straße kind of address, not a quay in Bernkastel.

The A1 and A60 are close, which is why the town works as a start. South, the Moselle bends begin, vineyard slopes and villages that are famous and narrow. North and west, the Vulkaneifel opens into maars, those round crater lakes around Daun, a different and quieter geometry.

Frankfurt Hahn airport is off to the northwest if that was the arrival. It is not the landscape. The landscape is a choice between a crowded wine river and a volcanic plateau. Wittlich's own centre is ordinary and fine, and it is not the place to linger in the van once the keys are in your hand.

A few things worth knowing

Park at the edge of Bernkastel and the other wine towns. The waterfront gap is not a campervan bay, however empty it looks for a moment.

Maar-rim car parks are viewpoints with short opening days and soft edges. Walk the rim if you must; do not spend the night in the viewpoint.

If you landed at Hahn, add the transfer time before you promise yourself a Moselle evening. The airport is closer to the motorway than to the vines, and the vines are slower than the motorway.
