Hiring a campervan in Northern Bavaria

Northern Bavaria, for a campervan, means Franconia: the Main valley, the Franconian Switzerland limestone country, the Steigerwald, and the northern end of the Romantic Road.

It does not mean Munich or the Alpine lakes. Bamberg, Würzburg, Bayreuth and Rothenburg are walking towns with old cores that defeat a motorhome. Nuremberg is the large city in the region that runs an Umweltzone; a green sticker matters there and not as a blanket rule for every Franconian high street.

The A3, A9, A73 and A70 move you quickly between these pockets. The moment you leave them for the Wiesent valley or a brewery village, the road shrinks, the rock overhangs, and the day changes speed. That contrast is the region. Planning it as 'Bavaria, so Alps by evening' is how people discover they are still on the Main at dusk.

A few things worth knowing

If Nuremberg is on the route, fit the green Umweltplakette before the city. Bamberg and Würzburg do not copy that rule, but their old centres are still no-go streets for a tall van.

Read height and width as carefully as a map in the Wiesent valley. An overhang that was fine on the A9 becomes the day's subject under a rock lip.
