Hiring a campervan in Berlin (Schönefeld)

Berlin (Schönefeld) is a southern yard on the Waltersdorfer Chaussee, in the commercial belt left by the old Schönefeld airfield and the approaches to BER.

It is not a handover in Mitte. The first driving task is local airport traffic, then the A113 north to the ring or the A10 itself, which passes close by.

Central Berlin's Umweltzone begins much farther in. Schönefeld sits outside it, so the green disc is for a later choice, not for leaving the yard. East and south of here the Dahme lakes and Königs Wusterhausen are a quieter first night than any plan that dives toward Alexanderplatz. West along the ring, Potsdam is reachable without using the inner-city streets.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Allow time for BER traffic even if you are not catching a flight. The Chaussee and the A113 share that load at the obvious hours.

  2. 02

If you do enter the Umweltzone later, the badge has to be green and it has to be on the windscreen before you cross the boundary, not bought as an afterthought at a central rank.

  3. 03

Book a pitch on the Dahme or farther out before you leave the yard in summer. The southern water towns look empty on a map and feel full by late afternoon.
