Plan your pickup and your first stop
Aachen sits in a basin where Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium meet, and a campervan has no business under the cathedral.
The inner streets around the Palatine Chapel and the Elisenbrunnen are a walking district. Treat Aachen as a place you leave on the ring, with the A4 east and the A44 as the fast exits, and the southern roads climbing toward Monschau and the Rur reservoirs.
The centre keeps an Umweltzone, so a green Umweltplakette matters if any errand takes you inside that boundary. Once you are south of the built-up bowl the landscape turns to forest, reservoirs and village high streets that were not built for a long overhang. The Dutch crossing at Vaals and the Belgian side toward Kelmis are close, and neither neighbour sells a motorway vignette for a private van, though their town centres have their own tight rules.
Join the ring before you pick a direction. East is Cologne and the Rhine; south is the Eifel; west is the border. Decide that before you are in the one-way system near the station.
Overnight in the old centre is not a realistic plan. Use a Stellplatz or a campsite on the edge, or push on to the reservoir villages, and read the local overnight rules rather than assuming a lay-by is a pitch.
Winter brings fog on the Venn plateau and snow on the higher Eifel roads. In summer the Monschau lanes fill with day-trippers; a weekday morning is the calmer passage if that detour is on your route.
