Hiring a campervan in Berlin

Berlin is a city you cross on the A10, the Berliner Ring, rather than a city you tour from behind a windscreen.

The inner districts sit inside an Umweltzone that follows the S-Bahn ring in broad terms, and a green Umweltplakette is required there. Unter den Linden, the government quarter and the old museum island are walking territory once the van is parked well outside.

The useful campervan map is the radials: A24 north toward the lakes and the Baltic, A13 southeast toward the Spreewald, A9 and A10 toward Potsdam and the Havelland, A12 toward Frankfurt an der Oder. Wannsee and Müggelsee are the classic watery edges, and both clog on hot weekends. Residential courtyards often have height bars that a motorhome will not clear.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Fit the green badge before you need an inner-city fuel stop. The zone is easy to enter by mistake from a radial that looks like a shortcut.

  2. 02

Do not plan to spend the night in a Wannsee lay-by or a forest car park. Berlin's green edges are patrolled, and a legal Stellplatz or campsite is the workable overnight.

  3. 03

Match-day traffic around the Olympic stadium and exhibition traffic at the fairgrounds can freeze the western radials. If your exit is west, check whether a large event is using those roads on handover day.
