Plan your pickup and your first stop
Whitehorse is a small capital on the Yukon River, and collecting a campervan here is a northern trip with long gaps between services.
The Alaska Highway runs through the city. Kluane and the big mountains lie west, toward Haines Junction and a landscape that makes the day’s mileage secondary. Dawson City is north on the Klondike Highway, a long day on a road that can be rough and is not a suburban commute. Skagway, over the White Pass, crosses into Alaska: a border, a mountain road, and seasonal conditions.
Summer daylight lasts late; winter is a specialist undertaking of cold and darkness. Wildlife on the highway is ordinary. A handover in Whitehorse is the town depot, not a pickup at every highway lodge.
Fuel in Whitehorse, then plan the next bowser as part of the route. A photo stop does not sell diesel.
If you are crossing to Alaska, carry the documents the border asks for and check whether the pass is appropriate for your vehicle that week. A summer plan and a September plan are not the same road.
Book campsites in the busy summer weeks, drive the long legs in daylight even when the sky stays bright, and give moose the lane. Distances that look like an afternoon on a southern map are a full Yukon day.
